Bequia in the Grenadines is the island that people often visit for a week or two and speak about it for years. So where in the Caribbean is Bequia? It is located at the top of the string of small islands that run down towards grenada, just 9 miles south of St Vincent. Approximately seven square miles, it is the largest and it’s old name, Becouya, is said to mean “island of the clouds”. You can check out our fast facts of Bequia to get more information on the population, distances and other interesting facts. This guide covers what it’s like to actually be here.
Realistically there are only two ways in, but majority tend to use just one.
Option 1 – Fly to Barbados then hop on small plane to Bequia’s own little airstrip
Time: Take just under an hour from Barbados
Cost: This is the fastest and most expensive route as small-plane fares add up.
What can go wrong: Luggage limits are of course, strict and if your flight happens to be delayed getting into Barbados you could miss the last hop and end up spending the night in Barbados.
Fares and schedules change, so for current options see flight availability.
Option 2 – Fly to St Vincent then take the ferry from Kingstown jetty
Time: Allow for 30-40 mins from airport to Kingstown jetty, then takes roughly an hour on the water
Cost: This is the budget route and usually costs around £7 to £10 each way, with a return ticket available.
What can go wrong: During winter months with stronger winds, the journey can feel quite bumpy, and a delayed flight in the evening could result in missing the last boat.
Our Bequia ferry guide has the operators, timetables and tips.
The best thing about Bequia is that the island is small enough that nothing is too far away, but where you sleep can help shape your holiday. We have lived in several of these places so know how each compare:
Port Elizabeth & Admiralty Bay
Princess Margaret Beach
Lower Bay
Friendship Bay
Spring
Mount Pleasant
Life on the island typically runs slowly, but more to do than those expect.
Diving & Snorkelling – Bequia’s reefs and walls are the reason that most of our visitors come back. Those wanting to dive there are several operators that run trips to sites such as Devil’s Table that offer courses for beginners. During peak season it is best to book in advance.
The Turtle Santuary – The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary at Park Bay rases young hawksbill turtles and returns them to sea.
Thursday Night Jump Ups – This is a long standing institution held weekly on Thursday nights. This is where locals and visitors end up in the same place with steal pan music, barbecue and dancing.
Sailing & Island-hopping – There are day charters that run to Mustique, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays.
Bequia Music Festival – Held every January over the course of several days at venues across the island. If you are planning a trip around this time, we would highly recommend booking accommodation way in advance as this is one of the most popular times.
Best thing about Bequia is that the climate is warm all year round. Daytime temps usually sit around high 20s to low 30s. The sea stays bath-warm so you don’t get a cold surprise when dipping your feet. The dry season is roughly December to May, it is our sunniest, busiest and most expensive season. The green season, June to November, is hotter and more humid with short heavy showers, quieter beaches and better value. Worth noting that this is also hurricane season which runs from 1st June to 30th November so if you plan to travel in this time, we would highly recommend taking out insurance that covers named storms.
There are typically 3 options when it comes to choosing accommodation on the island and these are:
